“I started at Selby College on the Level 3 Child Care course and following this, I got a job as a nursery practitioner. I progressed on to the Foundation Degree in early childhood studies and then progressed on to the Top Up in Early years Care and Education. Whilst doing this, I have worked my way up to a Deputy Manager role. From this, I decided I wanted to change my vocational pathway and I am now studying on the PGCE in Further Education course and I am volunteering in the Health and Social Care department teaching Level 3 Child Care and hope to get a job working as a Childcare Further Education tutor.”

College Connections

The College also has close connections with local schools and local and national health care providers, creating fantastic placement opportunities for students.

In March 2020, a group of eight students from Selby College were the first to take part in a brand-new Work Placement project based at the New Selby War Memorial Hospital. The pilot scheme saw students from Applied Science, Health & Social Care and A Level programmes shadow NHS staff at the hospital on Friday mornings. The students explored a number of different areas of the hospital, covering units such as X-Ray, Speech & Language Therapy, Orthoptics, the Community Response Team, Infection Control in Clinical Care, the work of Dietitians, the Essence of being a Doctor, and Patient Experience, alongside their own project work.

The College also has links with Selby Community Primary, which is a UNICEF rights respecting school. Teachers at the school have also visited the College to carry out activities with Level 3 students.

Selby College also works closely with CareSkills, which is a dedicated provider of outstanding training to the Childcare, Health and Social Care sector. Based at Selby College’s £35m state-of-the-art campus, CareSkills has earned itself an enviable reputation amongst local, regional and national employers, as well as with Higher Education providers.
