UAL Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Art & Design

Duration: 2 years
Course Level: Level 3
Assessment: 100% coursework. Internally assessed and externally moderated.
Entry Requirements: Standard Level 3 vocational entry requirements apply. The minimum requirement is at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 OR at least 3 GCSE subjects at Grade 4 alongside alternative GCSE equivalent requirements. At least one of Maths or English Language must be Grade 4 and neither lower than Grade 3. For this course, you will be expected to have a GCSE at Grade 4 or above in Art and Design or similar. If this is not the case, you can still arrange for an interview where you can showcase a portfolio of your artwork.

Please note: If you have not achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths you will be required to continue studying these alongside your college course.

Our aim is to discover what really excites you about Art & Design. The course explores a huge range of visual experiences. We will discuss work from artists and you will need the ability to look at the subject in a highly personal way as you respond to different influences. You will need to be committed to an intensive course and be prepared to devote considerable time to produce high-quality work.

Your Course

In Year One you will build skills in areas such as:

  • Drawing and Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Graphic Design
  • 3D-making
  • Computer-Generated Imaging
  • Experimental textiles

You will get to know your strengths and learn to focus your interests. There will be lots of opportunities for you to select specialisms that are best suited to you as an individual.

In Year Two, you will develop a pathway towards the course or career that is right for you. You will be working very independently with control over the kind of art work you make and what you want to communicate. The choice will be yours and our expert team will be here to guide you towards achieving your full potential.

As you prepare your portfolio and produce work for your final exhibition, you can expect to be working at a very high level and showing real expertise in your chosen area.

The college’s Awarding Body for this qualification is the University of the Arts London (UAL). The UAL Awarding Body is the only specialist art, design and creative industries awarding organisation in England. Part of the University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest specialist arts university, UAL has approved Selby College to teach the diploma, giving students extra credibility when going for interviews for higher levels of study or progression into employment.

Higher Education Progression

Many of our students progress onto the Higher National Diploma in Art & Design at Selby College or apply for university.
