On Thursday 3rd October, Selby College’s Refectory Manager Bev Welsh will be getting her hair shaved off at the onsite Aspire Hair & Beauty Salon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support’s Brave the Shave fundraiser.
Bev, who will be a familiar face to many former students and staff, has worked at the College since 2011, first in the Coffee Shop and since 2016 as Catering Manager, and has always wanted to give something back to the charity as her late father was cared for by a team from Macmillan in 2003 as he battled cancer.
The amazing support he was given by the Macmillan nurses that looked after him, covering everything from nursing to practical financial advice, gave Bev the push she needed to take the plunge and get a pack for this year.
The keen fundraiser, who has also previously hosted a number of Macmillan coffee mornings with a neighbour, as well as supporting the local Selby ‘Spirit of Christmas’ charity that runs inclusive Christmas family parties for the first time last year, said she will be “embracing my new look and be bald and proud” – despite the weather turning colder!
Bev is hoping that as many of her Catering team as possible, including her son Jonathan, and staff from the College will come and support her during the shave on Thursday afternoon - which will be tasked to Hair, Beauty, Hospitality & Catering Subject Area Manager Stewart King who normally styles her hair.
So far Bev has raised around £350, beating her original target of £200. If anyone would like to support Bev there is a Sponsor Form and Donation Box at the College’s Main Reception in the Jubilee Building as well as in her office. You can also donate via her Just Giving page set up on Facebook https://www.justgiving.com/Bev-Welsh?utm_source=messenger.
