Last week Selby College’s Sports Department hosted the semi-finals of the 2018 FA People's Cup - the biggest five-a-side tournament in the country - with more than 50,000 players taking part across the UK in 278 venues. The competition welcomes male, female and disability players across 18 categories, so there is a version for everyone.
The top-performing North Yorkshire institution welcomed teams from Lincoln College, Leeds City College and Sheffield College for the regional semi-finals of the Futsal (16-18) competition, an indoor version of the game, alongside our very own entry from the ‘Jeffers 5’ (comprising of first-year Sports students). Four teams took part in the Men’s category and two in the Female.
The Female tournament resulted in a one-sided affair as Lincoln College brushed aside Leeds City College by 12-2 and 9-1 despite their best efforts, to win the tournament at a canter and take their place in the finals.
The Men’s tournament was an even contest with all four teams in with an equal chance of winning, games were played at a high tempo and the players gave their all for a place in the final. Eventual winners Sheffield College beat our own Selby College representatives (Jeffers 5) by just one point to advance in the finals.
The Finals weekend takes place from the 28th to the 29th April at The FA’s National Football Centre, St George's Park in Burton-Upon-Trent, the home of England's national teams. The 18 FA People's Cup winners will also go on to the FA Cup Final to lift their trophy on the pitch at half-time.
Selby College’s Sports Development Officer Ed Grady said: “This was such a fantastic day for all the teams involved to feel part of the greatest and biggest cup competition in the world! All of the teams involved enjoyed their day. We wish Lincoln College and Sheffield College the best of luck in their finals.’’
