Fundraising success for charity Mind

Earlier this year, students and staff at Selby College put their baking skills to the test by taking part in the ‘Great Selby College Bake-Off’ event. The day was a huge success with students and staff bringing in their home-baked goods and competing against each other for the title of Best Large Cake and Best Tray Bake. The standard of entries this year was amazing as more than 30 students and staff battled for the top spot, with even the Principal Allan Stewart OBE, challenged to get baking by Guidance & Support Tutor Angie Hobden!

After the judging was completed the cakes were sold off at a coffee morning in the training restaurant to raise money for York Mind, a charity close to the hearts of the department. We are proud to announce that £482 has been raised by staff, students and their families.

Last week, Holly Bilton, a Community Fundraiser for York Mind and her colleague Hannah Hessle, a Befriending Manager for the Selby service, were delighted to come and meet the students involved and be formally presented with the cheque!

Holly added: “We are so pleased that the students and staff of Selby College were able to create such a fantastic fundraising event! York Mind relies heavily on donations to continue our vital one-to-one and group-based support, so it is wonderful to know that such a brilliant total was raised. We’re so grateful to have received this donation, and we’re thrilled that everyone enjoyed themselves whilst raising the money too.”

Speaking about the event, Angie said: “I was extremely proud of the effort the Level 2 Hospitality & Catering students put in to planning and organising the Bake-Off.  They worked incredibly hard encouraging staff and students to enter the competition, sourcing prizes for the raffle, and selling the cakes on the day. The event created a brilliant atmosphere in the restaurant and everyone had fun raising money for York Mind, a very worthwhile charity which we are happy to support.”
