About this course

The programme leads to a BSc in Sports Coaching and Exercise Science, validated by the University of Hull.

Why study this course?

The three year programme will provide the perfect platform to anyone wanting a career in a variety of roles within the sport industry. The main coaching modules will equip you with key skills to work with groups and individuals both at grassroots and elite level. These skills will be developed by science-based knowledge to underpin your level of understanding. The knowledge gained will assist you in the process of working with clients on a more individual basis. The programme will embed information about how these processes are supported from a funding and planning perspective, and you will gain a clear comprehension of the ethical and safeguarding concepts that underpin pedagogy in teaching, when working with others.

What will I study?

Students complete the Certificate Stage in Year 1, Diploma Stage in Year 2 and Honours Stage in Year 3.

Year 3 (Honours Stage):

  • Independent Research Project
  • Physical Activity and Health Promotion
  • Specialist Coaching and Leadership
  • Qualitative Analysis of Sport Performance
  • Current Practice in Physical Education and Coaching

Facilities and Equipment

Selby College has a dedicated HE room, extensive IT facilities and a well-stocked Learning Resource Centre with relevant texts, journals and e-resources which can be accessed on site and remotely.

Selby College has excellent facilities to support your studies. This includes a sports hall, gym and access to artificial training surfaces. There are arrange of fitness testing resources to give you the opportunity to develop your applied skills.

What can I do after the course?

The programme leads to a BSc in Sports Coaching and Exercise Science, validated by the University of Hull. The course content is specifically designed to be appropriate to the needs of the Sports Coaching and Fitness Industry.

Students may also progress into a range of careers including: Sports Development, Teaching (through further study to gain qualified teacher status), Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching and Gym Instruction (Personal Trainer), Sports Therapy and Sports Science.

Some students may choose to undertake further study at post-graduate level, such as Masters and PhD degrees. For those interested in progressing into teaching, there are postgraduate teacher training routes resulting in Qualified Teacher Status (required for teaching in schools in England and Wales) or the in-service PGCE/CertEd for teaching in the lifelong learning sector/post 16.

Who is this course aimed at?

This programme is aimed at students who have achieved Level 3 qualifications and are looking for an opportunity to undertake a degree programme where they will develop real-life skills in an applied environment, improving employment choices and career options. This programme will appeal to those who wish to complete their studies in an inclusive setting which is accessible, has well established employer links, and can provide a highly supportive teaching and learning environment.

Entry requirements

80 UCAS tariff points (NEW UCAS TARIFF) from either:

  • A Levels (a minimum of 40 UCAS points must come from A2 in a relevant subject)
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) in a relevant subject

The following are also required:

  • Grade C/4 or above in GCSE English, Maths and Science
  • An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • Two satisfactory references

Applications from mature students with relevant professional/life experience are welcome. You might be required to provide further evidence to decide on your suitability for the course and an admissions test may be used in certain circumstances.
