About this course

The BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hair and Beauty Management is a 3 year programme, providing students with a specialist vocational understanding of beauty. There will be a strong, sector-related emphasis on acquiring knowledge and understanding of key concepts, whilst simultaneously developing the practical skills necessary for a successful career within the beauty sector. This programme is currently open to applicants from the UK and EU only.

Why study this course?

This part-time programme is run over 3 years with students attending daytime/twilight sessions. The HNC in Hair and Beauty Management is designed to help students gain specialist vocational skills. You will gain strong industry-related skills and you will also acquire a sound knowledge and understanding of the beauty sector. This will help to develop your confidence if you choose to progress into employment or onto an HND/Top Up Degree. The qualification combines work-based practice with the academic skills that students need to operate at a higher level. You will be equipped with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in a range of positions in the beauty management industry.

What will I study?

Building on previous knowledge and skills in beauty, the course is structured to provide opportunities across a broad academic and vocational base, progressively deepening learners’ knowledge. Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring that students are able to effectively apply their knowledge to relevant practical situations.

Students undertake a range of units to complete the HNC. These are currently*:

  • Management of Health
  • Safety and Security in the Salon (core)
  • Salon Management (core)
  • Sales Management in the Hair and Beauty Sector (core)
  • Quality Management of Client Care in the Hair and Beauty Sector (core)

and a range of specialist units currently including*:

  • Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Wellbeing
  • Human Health and Nutrition
  • Hair and Scalp Specialist
  • Physiology of Ageing
  • Monitor and Maintain Spa Area
  • Spa Treatments
  • Provide Spa Treatments
  • Human Resources Management

Assessments for the course may take a variety of forms, from practical tasks, group work and presentations to formal, written assignments and reports.

Facilities and Equipment

Selby College has a dedicated HE room, extensive IT facilities and a well-stocked Learning Resource Centre with relevant texts, journals and e-resources which can be accessed on site and remotely.

Who is this course aimed at?

This is a nationally recognised qualification offering career and professional development for those entering or already established in the beauty field, as well as opening up progression opportunities for successful students to further their academic study to HND. The course is aimed at those who have completed a Level 3 course in Beauty or a related subject or who have relevant industry experience and are looking to progress to a practical Higher Education qualification. This programme will appeal to those who wish to complete their studies in an inclusive setting which is accessible and can provide a highly supportive teaching and learning environment.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS tariff points (NEW UCAS TARIFF) from

  • A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) in a relevant subject 
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma (QCF) in a relevant subject

 The following are also required:

  • Grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths
  • Two satisfactory references

Applications from mature students with relevant professional/life experience are welcome. You might be required to provide further evidence to decide on your suitability for the course and an admissions test may be used in certain circumstances.
