Access to Higher Education: Diploma in Science

Level: 3

Duration: 1 year (full-time)

The Science Access course is a 1 year programme which prepares mature students for Higher Education (university-level) courses in Science-related subjects. The awarding body is Certa. The Diploma is recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.

The course is an intensive, fast-track route into HE for mature students. It makes stringent requirements on learners in terms of time, commitment and academic development. There are frequent deadlines which to be met.  Students often have responsibilities outside of education such as work or children, which have helped to develop the maturity to cope with the demands of the course.  The programme delivery method includes: practical and theory with supported learning.

You will also be supported through the UCAS application process and overall be prepared for study at higher education. Our experienced teaching staff are passionate about their areas of expertise and are committed to helping you to attain your learning goals and meet your personal aims.


Entry requirements

  • You must be at least 19 years old
  • GCSE English at Grade C/4 or above

Most universities expect students to have grade C/4 in Mathematics when they apply for their Higher Education course and many are no longer accepting other Level 2 equivalents in literacy and numeracy. You are advised to check the requirements with your chosen higher education institution. Students applying for a science related courses are also likely to need a Grade C/4 in GCSE Science. It may be possible to study for these qualifications whilst undertaking the Access programme at Selby College.
