Emily Morbey, a former Selby College student, returned to the College to speak to the Sixth Form students about her journey from completing A Levels at the College to an undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford and a Masters and PhD at the University of Cambridge.

During Careers Week at the College, students at Selby College’s Sixth Form Centre had the opportunity to hear first-hand what it is like to study at two of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

After completing her A Levels in 2019 with 3 A*s in English Language, Maths and Biology, Emily secured a place at the University of Oxford to study for a Bachelors Degree in Human Sciences which she achieved a First Class Honours in.

Emily delivered a talk on epidemiology where she discussed the research she is currently undertaking as part of her doctorate; she also answered questions about her undergraduate degree, explaining what it entailed.

It was inspiring to hear from Emily. I learned that someone like me, from Selby College, with hard work and some luck, can follow an academic route to Oxbridge.

Listening to the Selby College alumna, the A Level students learned about the various fields they could work in and the diversity of career pathways available for those studying STEM subjects.

Emily gave the students a real insight into university life using her own experience. She informed the students about the options available for funding their higher education studies and shared some tips on the application process.

Emily encouraged the students to consider applying to the Universities and closed her speech with a poignant message.

There is no easy path in life. Everything is hard so choose your hard! You are just as capable as the next person.
