A Level Computing

Duration: 2 years
Course Level: Level 3
Assessment: 80% Exam 20% Coursework
Entry Requirements: Standard 'A' Level entry requirements. For this course a grade 6 in Maths is preferred.

This course primarily focuses on problem-solving using logical thinking and learning to program in a pre-determined language.

This course primarily focuses on developing problem-solving, abstract thinking, algorithmic and mathematical reasoning to solve future challenges. You will learn the concepts of programming and carry out specific programming projects.

It uses software development and programming as a tool to develop these skills. During the exams you are required to identify and edit existing code for a scenario. These are the most practical exams you can complete!

If you want to study a broader IT Computing curriculum you should consider the vocational Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT.

Your Course

As well as software development and computational thinking you will learn about internal computer hardware, data representation, data structures, communication and networking.

In Year 1, you will be assessed on your programming skills using a practical, on-screen, examination which allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of the fundamental principles of the subject, through a problem-solving scenario using pre-release material.

In Year 2, you will have the opportunity to engage with an exciting project using cutting-edge technology and devices. This will allow you to really engage with emerging technologies and expand your knowledge into software development. There is also an exam element in a similar format to Year 1. This course complements many different ‘A’ Levels, including the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in ICT, but it sits particularly well alongside Maths and Physics.

Your Future

On successful completion, you may progress on to a HNC/D in Computing and Systems Development at Selby College, a related degree in Computing or a Science subject or enter the Computing industry at an appropriate level.
