A Level English Literature builds on knowledge and understanding developed at GCSE. It is an ideal choice if you like reading and analysing novels, poetry and plays. If you enjoyed English at GCSE and want to study the subject further, then this course is ideal for you.
You will study a good variety of novels, collections of poetry and drama texts and will greatly develop and extend your analytical skills. In addition, you will research the social, historical and political context of texts, discuss critical opinions, and develop the ability to argue different viewpoints. The course is taught in a friendly and supportive environment and involves a mixture of class teaching, group work and research projects. There may be the opportunity to visit the theatre or other enrichment activities to support your study. In the second year, students will have the opportunity to choose their own texts to use in their coursework.
On successful completion, you may go on to study English Literature at university or other Higher Education courses in Teacher Training, Public Relations, Marketing, Cultural Studies, Law, Gender Studies and journalism.
