Vernon Wells, Chairman of Selby College Corporation is to be recognised for his work in furthering the cause of further education by being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year’s Honours list.
Vernon, a retired local business owner has played a key role with other members of the Corporation in overseeing this top-performing tertiary college achieve some remarkable milestones, including the complete redevelopment of the campus and in more recent years, its Ofsted inspection when it became one of the first colleges in England to gain a complete set of five ‘Outstanding’ grades.
Vernon has remained adamant from the beginning that the community deserved a fitting campus to compliment and reward the work of all the inspirational students and staff. The college is currently undertaking a further building project to extend its engineering facilities.
Over the past ten years, the Abbot’s Road based organisation has gone from strength-to-strength and is now viewed as a beacon of educational success locally, regionally and nationally. The award comes just weeks after the college achieved the number one spot in Yorkshire and the joint second in England for its performance across the board.
Vernon has always stressed the importance of college serving all the community’s needs; by providing A-Levels, technical courses and Apprenticeships.
When asked about being recognised in the New Year’s Honours List and awarded an MBE, Vernon said, I’m absolutely thrilled and so very proud, as it is such a great honour and privilege to be involved with the Corporation of such a prestigious college. Together we have achieved so much.
