Sophie Thomas... Following a career path into Web Design

Celebrating Success with Sophie Thomas

  • Former School: Brayton High School
  • Class of: 2015
  • Studied: BTEC Extended Diploma in Information Technology

Doing What? Currently studying Web Technologies at Huddersfield University, Sophie is working towards achieving her ambition of becoming a successful Web Designer. Sophie’s interest in the field of Web Design stems back to the final years of high school which prompted her to enrol on a course related to Information Technology. The obvious choice for Sophie was Selby College’s BTEC Extended Diploma in Information Technology, largely due to wide variety of units the qualification covers. Quickly realising her natural talents for creating content, Sophie found a passion for Web Design. Using the skills that she learnt from her time at college Sophie is well on her way to building up an extensive portfolio of work and has gone on to achieve a great deal including; launching STWebDesigner, a personal YouTube channel offering web design tutorials, completing her first ever client project and a personal highlight; interviewing Google Interaction Designer; Travis Neilson.

Sophie is a big believer in side projects and recently returned to college to deliver a series of presentations to current IT students, emphasising the importance of gaining as much experience and exposure as possible to enhance your skills. Speaking of her former tutors Sophie said, “The IT staff at Selby College helped me find what I am passionate about, which is Web Design. Their time and dedication enabled me to achieve grades higher than I ever expected to get.”

Looking to the future, Sophie’s focus is to look at refining and improving her social media presence and continue to produce and publish high quality work, alongside her studies.

If you are keen to pursue a career in Web design or any other form of IT Sophie added; “I would recommend this course (BTEC Extended Diploma in Information Technology) to those who are interested in the IT industry but are unsure of what specific field they want to go into. This course has a total of 18 units that allows you to explore the different aspects of IT.”
