Sophie Henderson … Following A Career Path Into Fashion Journalism

  • Name: Sophie Henderson
  • Class of: 2009
  • Studied: BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion Pathway)
  • Doing What? Currently working as a Fashion Assistant for Marie Claire. Former Snaith School student Sophie studied for a BSC (Hons) degree in International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University after completing her BTEC course at Selby College. During her sandwich Placement year Sophie had the opportunity to work for companies including Ralph Lauren and The Telegraph’s Stella magazine as a Buyer’s Assistant and Fashion Intern before graduating with First-class honours. Her first job after graduating was as a Junior Fashion Assistant for The Sun, News International which involved writing fashion features, organising photoshoots and liaising with other teams such as the PR team, as well as keeping ahead of all the latest trends.

Sophie loved studying Textiles at school and when she visited Selby College at one of the Open Events, she knew the Fashion course was for her as she found the department really interesting and very creative.

Looking back on her time at Selby College, Sophie’s favourite element was “being set a brief and beginning a new project”, and said of the course, “there was plenty of room for creativity and the lecturers were great at inspiring me to develop ideas and push myself.

“Their passion for their job and the industry made me enjoy the course and achieve the grade I did. I also left the course with a varied portfolio that I still take with me to interviews today. The course broadened my knowledge about the various different aspects of the industry. Selby College helped me establish what I wanted to do with my career.”

Looking ahead, Sophie would ultimately like to become a Fashion Editor. In the meantime, she is very happy in her role and enjoying herself in the industry.

If Sophie could give one bit of advice it would be this: “I spent the first couple of the months on the course not making as much effort as I should have done. When I committed myself to the course and put my best effort in, I achieved great results that motivated me even further.”
