Samantha Thompson...Found a job that helped her pursue her Degree

  • Class of: 2013
  • Studied: FD in Engineering for the Power Industry
  • Doing What? Working as a Steel Erector

Samantha Thompson couldn’t wait to get out into the world of work, so she enrolled on an Apprenticeship at 16 and found a placement with Doosan Power Systems Ltd. This has allowed her to develop her academic qualifications alongside practical work-related skills and secure her a place on the first ever Foundation Degree in Engineering at Selby College.

The 23-year-old from Ellsemere Port in Cheshire is not put off by the industry’s masculine reputation either saying; “Yes, Engineering is a very male dominated industry and from the age of 16 I have always been pretty much the only female, but having the determination to progress in a career you enjoy spurs me on.”

It is that determination that has allowed Samantha to succeed and saw her being named FD/HND Student of the Year in the 2013 UK Nuclear Awards.
