- Name: Matthew Warchus
- Class of: 1984
- Studied: 'A' Levels
- Doing What? Olivier Award-Winning Theatre Director
It's hard to think that the award-winning theatre Director of hit West End musical Matilda once took to the stage at Selby College, but back in 1984 he was one of the first students to complete his studies at the Abbot's Road site.
Of course, things were very different then and anyone with ambitions to go on to university had to study 'A' Levels and so, having successfully completed his 'O' Levels at Selby High School where he took part in a number of amateur productions, Matthew went on to further his studies. He had no idea at the time that he was about to make history, but after completing his first year of the 'A' Level programme, he was one of the first students to move from the school Sixth Form to the new Selby College, where he completed his studies before moving on to Bristol University.
Twenty-five years later Matthew again made history, this time on the global stage, scooping a much sought after Olivier Award for Best Director for Matilda The Musical, which went on to win a record breaking 36 awards including Best New Musical and Best Actor.
