For most 18-year-olds leaving home is a big step, so imagine moving to the other side of the world on your own. That’s exactly what one former Engineering student from Selby College did in pursuit of his dream job.
Matthew Boyce, a former Howden School and Technology College student, surrendered his dual citizenship and pledged allegiance to the United States of America so that he could pursue his dream of becoming a US Airman.
The 19-year-old, known to his friends as ‘Boycee’, has been a UK cadet since he was 13 and always wanted to join the armed forces, but decided to follow this dream in the United States because he felt their education programme would allow him to develop a career after his service that was better suited to his interests.
Matthew who has already been promoted to the rank of Private E2 with one stripe for which he received a commemorative medal at his passing out parade, will now go on to train as a Fuel Systems Specialist at Sheppard Air Force base near Wichita Falls.
