In 2014, Selby College’s commitment to finding the best teaching staff was honoured when the Hospitality and Catering department scooped a Pearson Silver Teaching Award for the best Further Education Team of the Year.
The Education sector’s equivalent of the Oscars, the Pearson Awards recognise the life-changing impact of inspirational teachers on the lives of the young people they teach, and the Hospitality and Catering Team have certainly gone the extra mile.
The core team comprise 8 exceptional professionals led by Catering Manager Adrian Dawes who has a simple vision: to make his department the best in the country, educating students to the highest of standards so that they would be able to secure exceptional job opportunities at the most prestigious restaurants in the world.
Since 2011, the staff have worked hard to transform the department into one of the best with students now ranked among the highest performing in the college and in the top 1% nationally. Enrolments have grown substantially and student satisfaction rates are now exceptionally high. Students say this is because ‘staff believe in us and what we can achieve’ and they are ‘inspired’ by the Teachers.
Equipped with fully-functioning kitchens, restaurant and bar, the college Chef School inspires young Trainee Chefs to start their journey of discovery, looking for exciting new ingredients and recipes and working across a variety of hospitality roles.
