Craig Walker...Working for Macmillan Cancer Support and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service

  • Name: Craig Walker
  • Former School: Howden School
  • Class of: 2008
  • Studied: National Diploma in BTEC Sport.
  • Doing What? Works for Macmillan Cancer Support as a specialist physical activity instructor and also for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service as a retained fire-fighter.

Craig joined Selby College with aspirations of becoming a personal trainer and to also further develop his sporting ability and coaching knowledge. Throughout the course he was given the tools and qualifications he needed for job opportunities. After leaving college he started working in the gym and on the poolside at the Goole Leisure Centre, as well as assisting with football coaching sessions.

Craig was then emailed by his old college tutor about a job opportunity at Selby Leisure Centre which he was lucky enough to get. Here he worked as gym instructor for five years. Alongside working in the gym, he also set up his own personal training company, this then lead Craig to working with more specialised groups such as GP referrals, then on to cardiac rehabilitation. Craig’s current job role is working for Macmillan Cancer Support as a specialist physical activity instructor; here he runs a scheme to help people living with and beyond cancer get more active. Craig also works for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service as a retained fire-fighter for Howden Station.

During Craig’s time at Selby College, he said: "It was the best two years of my life so far; I made some great friends I still see today seven years on. The staff always encouraged us to help one another in the class room and outside of college, which made myself look forward to going to college every day, lessons were always made fun, and the help I received from tutors either with work or any other issues in life has always stuck with me, and I’ll always appreciate them going that extra step. I believe it’s that effort that made me driven to be in a career where I can help people improve their quality of life, and help anyway I can. Even today the staff have always welcomed me back and helped me with promotions in my current job role.”

If you have aspirations of working in fitness or sport, Craig found the BTEC National Diploma gave him everything he needed to be successful in that area.
